The Beauty Myth

The Beauty Myth: How Images of Beauty are Used Against Women is a book written by Naomi Wolf.

The book is about the struggle for women's equality and women's compulsive pursuit of beauty.

"The myth of female beauty challenges every woman, every day of her life.
Naomi Wolf exposes the tyranny of the beauty myth through the ages and its oppressive function today, in the home and at work, in literature and the media, in relationships between men and women, between women and women. With pertinent and intelligent examples, she confronts the beauty industry and its advertising and uncovers the reasons why women are consumed by this destructive obsession."

This book was a very interesting and important part of my research. It got me thinking about my own beauty regimes. Thinking about how long they actually do take and how much it cost's me in makeup and beauty products and made me wonder why I participate in them. Do I do it for myself or for everyone else?
When it comes to makeup I'm not as bad as some people I know, I can go out without makeup on and not mind. I do sometimes feel like while I'm out I hope that I won't bump into anyone I know but overall I'm not that bothered if I do. Whereas I have some friends who refuse to leave the house without makeup on, they just won't go out without it.
I find this quite upsetting and restricting, if I need to go out and don't have makeup on me I will do but some people I know just would not leave the house.

It's upsetting to think people have become like this when one day they would have never of worn it. What made them like this? When did it all start?
