Extreme Makeover is another TV show that is shown in the USA. In this show people volunteer to receive a makeover in Hollywood.
"The show depicts ordinary men and women undergoing "extreme makeovers" involving plastic surgery, exercise regimens, hairdressing and wardrobing. Each episode ends with the participants' return to their families and friends, showing the reactions of their loved ones, who have not been allowed to see the incremental changes during the participants' absence."
I feel like these kind of shows might be entertaining, even I watch some of them but they aren't going to help people who already have body issues who might be watching them thinking about getting this kind of stuff done.
It comes across like this idealised beauty can only be achieved through cosmetic surgery. Meaning this 'beauty' is an unachievable goal for most people as they don't have the money to afford cosmetic surgery.
Critics of the show have said..
"their only other means of coming close to attaining ‘beauty’ is through extreme dieting and exercise, which then has the potential of creating eating disorders, as well as exercise disorders. Furthermore, critics believe that the show exemplifies and emphasises the importance society places on physical appearance, as opposed to thoughts or beliefs. According to critical analysis, the show places far too much importance on how a person presents himself or herself to society, as opposed to what they contribute to it."
These are just some examples of what people have had done. Looking at the images some of the people look unrecognisable. One of the main things you can see on the images is that they have all had there teeth done. Which will make there face look a different shape anyway and they've all obviously had plastic surgery.
It would be interesting to know if there families weren't being filmed at the time they reveal there new look would they still show happy emotions that there loved ones look so different. Or would they be a bit unsure that they looks so different.
Again I feel like this program promotes cosmetic surgery for all the wrong reasons.
